There are two terms signifying the ill health due to indoor air pollution- sick building syndrome(SBS) and building related illness(BRI).
SBS is the existence of persistent, non-specific symptoms (e.g., eye, nose, and throat irritation; fatigue; headaches) that occur in more than 20-25% of a building's occupants. it dissipates once these inhabitants leave the building. It is usually a diagnosis of exclusion.
BRI refers to clinically diagnosed disease(s) in building occupants and have defined diagnostic criteria, recognizable causes, and defined treatments. Typically individuals suffering from a BRI require prolonged recovery times after leaving the suspected environment, and successful remediation or mitigation requires elimination of exposure to the causative agents.
