FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)
FMG includes procedures to intentionally alter the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is done by untrained traditional circumcisers. However, there have been reported cases of the procedures carried out by healthcare practitioners.
The procedure has absolutely no benefits, and leaves victims with
• problems with urinating
• infection
• infertility
• severe bleeding
• shock
• formation of cysts
• lack of pleasure, but pain during sex
• severe, unbearable pain
• injury to organs and tissues
• psychological trauma
The surgical procedure involves:
-Removal of parts or whole of the clitoris
-Removal of the folds surrounding the vagina
-Pricking, piercing, scraping and cutting the areas of the genital
The tools used range from knives to blades, scissors, razor and even pieces of broken glass.
About 140 million women and girls around the world are living with the complications of this inhuman act. Apart of its consequences on health, it should be noted that the act is illegal.
